A Historic Gem Near Valtice
Portz Insel Chateau is a unique historical structure located near the Austrian border, between Valtice and Sedlec. This picturesque 17th-century summer palace was originally built on an artificial island in the now-vanished Portz Pond. Although it was neglected for many years, it is now undergoing restoration and gradually becoming an important cultural and tourist center of South Moravia.
History of the Chateau
The chateau was built in 1629 by order of Cardinal Franz von Dietrichstein, who used it as a hunting lodge and retreat. Originally, it was part of an extensive water management system, with Portz Pond being a component of the Lednice-Valtice Complex. After the pond was drained in the 18th century, the chateau lost its original function and gradually fell into disrepair.
During the 20th century, the building was largely devastated, and after World War II, it lost its historical significance. Only in recent years has it undergone extensive renovation, and today it serves as a winery and venue for cultural events.
Architecture and Current Use
Portz Insel is an example of early Baroque architecture with simple yet elegant lines. The building has been preserved in its original form, featuring characteristic arcades and a mansard roof. The reconstruction restored not only the historical masonry but also the interiors, which now provide space for social events, wine tastings, and other cultural gatherings.
Today, the chateau primarily serves as a wine center and tourist destination. Its new owners host Moravian wine tastings, historical tours, and themed events focused on regional history and local traditions.
Surroundings and Tourist Attractions
In addition to the chateau itself, the surrounding area offers many other attractions worth visiting:
